Although I have been a dentist since 2002, I first stumbled into the world of ‘EVIDENCE ORAL HEALTH AND PREVENTION’ during COVID-19 lockdowns. The cause is rather an embarrassingly random story: I found myself engaged in a social media debate regarding the use of fluoride in toothpaste for children. I was determined to prove my argument to be correct, so I looked for research to support my claims. Oh, boy, was I hit with a lot of research!

Although the topic of ‘PREVENTION OF DISEASE ‘ is taught in dental school, it was never considered especially important by the staff or the dentists themselves. Thus, although dentists know more than a layperson about this topic, I have had to dedicate countless hours to reading empirical papers in order to become maximally confident about all the suggestions I make.

 

This incident helped me see ‘my purpose’ in being useful with the knowledge I already possessed. I took upon myself the mission of spreading valuable and relevant dental information based on evidence, to everyone who wants to look after their teeth or their little ones' teeth better and is confused by all the noise and myths on social media and the internet. Along the way, I also want to burst many bubbles of young and some older dentists/hygienists making claims with poor quality dental research and, most importantly, trying to sell their products.

 

CAUTION: Just because a dentist can clean their teeth well with a product, it does not necessarily mean you will be able to do the same. Therefore, it's best to stick to research and guidelines!
